My favorite part of NYC is Chinatown. To me, this part of the city feels like an entirely different city and we love exploring it. There are so many cool interesting foods to try and nice people to meet. Here are some of our favorite places that we have been in Chinatown.
New Kam Hing Coffee Shop
We’ve kinda been obsessed with this food group that has recently been plastered across the internet: jiggly pastries. There’s so many videos on Instagram of jiggling pancakes, jiggling cakes, jiggling cheesecakes, you get the point. We found a shop that sells $1 jiggly sponge cakes and they are pretty much everything we were looking for in terms of jiggly foods. We got an original cake flavored one and green tea flavored one. They were both warm and fluffy and jiggly little cakes that were quite delicious. Also $1 anything is hard to come by in NYC, so we were really happy to find this place.
New Kam Man Supermarket
We accidentally went to this supermarket because we put the wrong address in our GPS, but we are so happy that Google Maps brought us here. We wandered this three-story super market with so many yummy foods, nifty eating utensils, and jars of many different ingredients. We were so excited to find some of our favorite Asian snacks that we’ve never seen in America or Europe before (so of course we had to buy them). This supermarket even sold ginseng (which I was really excited since my recent research has been on this root). Overall, we loved this supermarket and could have spent even more time there.
Shu Jiao Fu Zhou Cuisine
I never could have imagined that peanut butter and noodles would be so good, but it is truly delicious. We found this place by googling the cheapest place to eat in Chinatown. For $7.50 we got two ginormous plates of peanut butter noodles, a plate of steamed pork dumplings, and a diet coke. Plus they were some of the best noodles we’ve ever had. We sat at a wooden counter facing out the window into the street, in a place where only Mandarin was spoken, eating PB noodles with chopsticks. So far, its been one of my favorite things we’ve done in NYC.
Harper’s Bakery
I love bubble tea. If you’re unfamiliar, bubble tea is tea (usually with milk and loads of sugar) with tapioca ‘bubbles’ at the bottom. It is also called Boba tea. It is really interesting to try at first, but it is also delicious. There are loads of bakeries throughout Chinatown, but this is one that we really liked that had homemade tapioca balls and if you wanted, your bubble tea could even be served in a glass that looked like a light bulb. We hope to go back and try some of their homemade pastries with another bubble tea sometime.
Vanessa’s Dumpling House
This place is a NYC chain with several locations across the city, but we went to the location in downtown Chinatown. The prices are still really good considering it’s a chain. We tried the sesame sauce noodles. The sesame sauce is similar to the peanut butter sauce since there is also pureed peanuts in this sauce as well. However, the noodles were fresh and absolutely delicious. There were also fresh carrots and cucumbers topping the noodles with extra crunch. We enjoyed this place a lot and would definitely go back again to try some of the dumplings.
Here’s just some of our favorite places in Chinatown, but I am sure there are many other places in Chinatown that are wonderful and delicious too. We can’t wait to explore the area some more!
